Screening Technologies That Save Lives

Cancer is frightening largely because it often develops silently. Many cancers do not produce noticeable symptoms until they reach advanced stages, by which point treatment becomes significantly more difficult and costly. In contrast, cancers detected at an early stage often have far higher cure rates. The principle of "early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment" remains one of the most effective strategies in the fight against cancer.

Why Early Screening Matters

Consider lung cancer as an example: the five-year survival rate for Stage I lung cancer exceeds 90%, while for Stage IV it drops below 10%. The same pattern holds for gastric and colorectal cancers — early detection versus late detection can mean the difference between life and death. This is why cancer screening has become a shared focus of the medical community and the general public in recent years.

Major Cancer Screening Technologies in China

Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) is currently the most established method for lung cancer screening. Compared with conventional CT scans, LDCT delivers substantially lower radiation while still detecting pulmonary nodules just a few millimeters in size. Several Chinese cities have incorporated LDCT into routine health checkups for high-risk populations. Individuals over 50 who have a long history of smoking or a family history of cancer are advised to undergo annual LDCT screening.

Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy remain the gold standard for screening digestive tract cancers. Through endoscopic examination, physicians can directly observe the interior of the gastrointestinal tract, identify early-stage cancers or precancerous lesions such as polyps, and remove them during the same procedure. China has a high incidence of gastrointestinal cancers, and adults over 40 are recommended to undergo at least one gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The widespread adoption of "sedated endoscopy" has greatly improved the comfort of these procedures in recent years.

Liquid Biopsy is a rapidly advancing technology. By drawing a small blood sample and testing for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) or tumor markers released by cancer cells, liquid biopsy can help assess whether a tumor may be present. It is currently used as a supplementary screening tool for liver cancer (alpha-fetoprotein testing), prostate cancer (PSA testing), and others. Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) technologies are also advancing quickly, with a single blood draw potentially screening for multiple cancer types simultaneously.

AI-Assisted Imaging Analysis is transforming traditional screening workflows. Using deep learning algorithms, AI can rapidly analyze CT scans, X-rays, and other imaging data, helping physicians identify small lesions that might otherwise be overlooked. Multiple leading hospitals in China have already integrated AI-assisted diagnostic tools into lung nodule screening and mammography, significantly improving both the efficiency and accuracy of early detection.

Who Should Prioritize Screening?

The following groups are considered high-risk and should consider regular, targeted screening:

  • Long-term smokers or those with significant secondhand smoke exposure (lung cancer risk)
  • Those with a family history of gastrointestinal cancers (stomach and colorectal cancer risk)
  • Chronic hepatitis B or C carriers (liver cancer risk)
  • Women over 40 (breast and cervical cancer risk)
  • Those with long-term exposure to carcinogens or radiation

Screening Is Not a "Magic Bullet"

It is important to remember that an abnormal screening result does not equal a cancer diagnosis — many suspicious findings turn out to be benign after further investigation. Likewise, a normal screening result does not provide an absolute guarantee against cancer. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, undergoing regular checkups, and seeking prompt medical attention when symptoms arise remain the scientifically sound approach to cancer prevention.

The significance of cancer screening lies in shifting from reactive treatment to proactive defense. When medical technology enables us to detect cancer while it is still in its earliest stages, we take a meaningful step closer to overcoming this disease.
